This collection contains documents relating to Edwin Clarence Norton, the first Dean of Pomona college. Norton served as Dean from 1893 until his retirement in 1926, but was active at the college since 1888. These papers contain autobiographical materials, speeches, correspondence, and other materials relating to Norton's life and especially his time at Pomona College and in the Claremont area.

When the Pacific Steamship Company went out of business in 1936, the surviving records of the company were offered to The Claremont Colleges if someone would go to Seattle to sort the papers and select what was to be kept. John H. Kemble, Professor of History, Pomona College, took on this task.
